In any given year, suicide kills more people than homicide. In the U.S., suicide is the 10th leading cause of death overall and the 3rd leading cause of death for people aged 15-24 years old. Volunteering as a suicide hotline worker is a way that I can help to prevent these deaths from happening. By providing support to those who are considering suicide, I can help them to find other solutions and to see that there are other ways out. I also want to become a suicide hotline volunteer because it is an incredibly challenging and rewarding experience. I have been working in the mental health field for over 10 years now. I have experience working with a wide range of mental health issues, from anxiety and depression to more severe diagnoses such as bipolar disorder and psychosis. I have worked in both hospital and community settings, providing individual and group therapy. I am also trained in Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), which is an evidence-based treatment for people with Borderline Personality Disorder. I am currently working as a therapist in a community Mental Health setting, where I see clients on a long-term basis. I am passionate about helping people to manage their mental health, and believe that therapy can be life-changing.
I unfortunately do have personal experience with suicide and suicidal thoughts. A few years ago, I lost someone very dear to me to suicide. It was an incredibly traumatic experience and it rocked my world. Not only did I have to deal with the grief of losing a loved one, but I also felt guilty and ashamed that I couldn't save them. For a long time, I struggled with suicidal thoughts and feelings of worthlessness. However, through therapy and self-care, I was eventually able to get past those feelings. If I were dealing with a caller who was experiencing a mental health crisis, the first thing I would do is try to calm the caller down and gain their trust. I would ask them questions to get a better understanding of their situation, and then advice them on the best course of action to take. If necessary, I would stay on the line with the caller until they feel safe and secure.
Listening and empathy are two of the most important skills that one can possess when it comes to interacting with others. I have been fortunate enough to have had ample opportunities to develop my listening and empathy skills through my work, personal relationships, and volunteer experiences. I work as a case manager for a social services agency that provides support to individuals and families dealing with mental health and addiction issues. One of the key components of my job is to listen attentively to my clients in order to understand their unique situations and needs. I then use this information to create individualizedcare plans that address their specific needs. There are times when a 911 dispatcher may feel overwhelmed or like they cannot handle a call. In those moments, it is important to remember to stay calm and to use crisis intervention techniques if needed. It is also important to remember that you are not alone, and there are other dispatchers available to help you. If possible, take a break from the call if needed, but always let your supervisor know if you are feeling overwhelmed.
I’m absolutely comfortable working with people of all ages! I love interacting and connecting with people of all ages, and I feel that I have a lot to offer older and younger generations alike. I think it’s so important to learn from and share experiences with each other, and I truly believe that by working together, we can create a more understanding and inclusive world.
My availability for volunteering is very flexible. I am available weekday evenings, Saturday mornings, and all day Sunday. I am also able to do occasional weekday afternoons and evening hours.
I have not received any formal training in crisis intervention or suicide prevention. However, I have years of experience working with people who are experiencing a mental health crisis. I am very comfortable intervening in a crisis and am skilled at de-escalating high-stress situations. I also have a great deal of experience talking to people who are suicidal, and I know how to ask the right questions to assess their risk level. I am confident in my ability to provide support and assistance to someone who is in need of help.
